Transport insurance typically covers the following types of damage:
- Damage in transit: damage to goods caused by accidents, careless handling or environmental influences
- Theft: loss due to theft during transportation
- Loss: loss of goods during transportation
- Fire: damage caused by fire, lightning or explosion
- Water damage: damage caused by water ingress, e.g. during transportation by sea
- Natural hazards: damage caused by natural events such as storms, flooding or earthquakes
As a rule, the following are not covered
- Damage caused intentionally
- Damage caused by gross negligence on the part of the policyholder
- Damage caused by war, civil unrest or nuclear events
- Damage due to inadequate packaging
- Damage due to normal wear and tear
- Individual policy: Insurance cover for a specific transport or shipment
- General policy: insurance cover for all transports of a company within a certain period of time
- Framework contract: individually agreed insurance cover for recurring transports or specific transport conditions
- Cargo insurance: cover for the transportation of goods and merchandise
- Contract transport insurance: cover for the transportation of a company's own goods and merchandise using its own vehicles
- Manufacturers and retailers: protection for the shipment of goods and merchandise to customers or business partners
- Logistics and forwarding companies: Protection for their customers' goods during transportation
- Construction companies: Protection for the transportation of construction materials and machinery
- Farmers: protection for the transportation of agricultural products
All risks cover extends the insurance protection to all unforeseen damage that is not expressly excluded. This offers more comprehensive protection than traditional transportation insurance, which only covers certain risks.
