Professional insurance cover for midwives secured until mid-2027

Detmold – The German Midwives Association (DHV) has now extended liability insurance coverage for its members until June 30, 2027, in close cooperation with Hevianna Versicherungsdienst GmbH, a subsidiary of the Ecclesia Group. The contract concluded with a consortium of insurers will take effect upon expiration of the current agreement on July 1, 2024, and is an important offer for midwives to continue to cover risks arising from their professional activities in the future.

Detmold – The German Midwives Association (DHV) has now extended liability insurance coverage for its members until June 30, 2027, in close cooperation with Hevianna Versicherungsdienst GmbH, a subsidiary of the Ecclesia Group. The contract concluded with a consortium of insurers will take effect upon expiration of the current agreement on July 1, 2024 and is an important offer for midwives to continue to cover risks arising from their professional activities in the future.

We are very pleased that, with the conclusion of the new insurance contract, we can offer our members predictability, a secure foundation and important protection for the coming years,” says Ulrike Geppert-Orthofer, president of the DHV, which currently represents over 22,000 midwives, about 3,000 of whom provide obstetric care. For the DHV, the extension of the contract with the consortium of experienced healthcare insurers in Germany brings with it high performance, reliability and a wealth of experience in handling birth defects. For some time now, it has been difficult for midwives to obtain adequate insurance cover on the market. “Most insurers shy away from covering the occupational risks of midwives due to the high claims burden and calculation difficulties,” says Johannes Jaklin of the insurance broker hevianna Versicherungsdienst. “In addition, such protection is often associated with a steady increase in premiums.”

Nevertheless, they have now not only succeeded in ensuring insurance coverage for midwives until 2027, but have even managed to negotiate a constant premium for 2024. “The premium will remain constant for midwives without obstetrics in the following years, while we were able to negotiate moderate premium increases of 5 percent in 2025 and 2026 in the contract negotiations with the insurance consortium for midwives with obstetrics to compensate for inflation,” explains Christian Seeger from hevianna Versicherungsdienst. A program developed by the German Midwives Association for structured risk management, which is specifically aimed at the group of freelance midwives who provide obstetric care and whose risk is particularly exposed, has also contributed to this. The program, which includes simulation training, is also financially supported by the insurers (Versicherungskammer Bayern, R+V, Allianz, Debeka, Württembergische) and hevianna, as it offers the chance to further increase the safety level in obstetrics.
